Rebecca Sykes
Waggoner
Rebecca Sykes was the
daughter of Joshua Sykes, Sr, and Ann Morris. Rebecca was born on May 17,
1789 in Halifax County, North Carolina and died in Dade County, Missouri.
Rebecca married Daniel Waggoner on August 10, 1810 in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Daniel was the son of Cornelius Waggoner and Susannah Unknown. This part of
our family is being researched by several of the descendants of Cornelius
Waggoner, including Sharon Stovall, John Waggoner, Jr., Janice Mears, Brenda
Kerns and others. These researchers have examined records in North Carolina,
Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and other states and have generously provided
the following information on this part of our family.

Cornelius Wagoner was born before 1775 and
died about 1843. He first married Susannah Unknown and second married Amy
Unknown. Cornelius was in Davidson County, Tennessee as early as 1798 when
he is known to have witnessed a deed. On March 5, 1804 he purchased 200 acres
of property in Smith County, Tennessee. On March 13, 1809 the following notice
appeared in the Carthage Gazette, a Smith County Newspaper.
"PUBLIC
NOTICE--Whereas my wife Susannah Waggoner has eloped from my bed and board
without any just cause, this is theretofore to caution all persons against
crediting her on my account. I am
determined not to pay any debt's of her contracting. Whereas my son Daniel and my daughter Caty are now acting for
themselves, any person trusting them must look to them for pay as I will not
pay any debt of their contracting.

1831. Susan is buried in Duke Cemetery, White's Creek, Davidson County, Tennessee.

Daniel Waggoner married Rebecca Sykes on August 10, 1810 in

Jacob Waggoner first married Celia Enoch in about 1830.
Celia was born on May 7, 1808 in
Tennessee and died on October 23, 1878 in Smith County. Celia was the daughter
of John Enoch and Nancy Shy. Jacob and Celia are buried in the Waggoner
Cemetery, Old County House Road in Smith County. Jacob and Celia had the
following children.
1. Melvina Waggoner
was born on June 18, 1831 in Smith County and died on October 23, 1904 in
Smith County. Melvina married Thomas Ballenger on March 13, 1850 in Smith
County. Thomas was born on February 22, 1822 in Virginia and died on August
1, 1900 in Smith County. Melvina and Thomas are buried in Ballenger Cemetery,
Hogan Creek in Smith County.
2. Dorthula Perlina
Waggoner was born in on September 30, 1832 in Smith County and died on March
18, 1889 in Smith County. Dorthula first married James M. Skelton on March
6, 1856. James was born on February 6, 1822 and died on March 7, 1862. Dorthula
second married Mitchell Perry Martin on December 23, 1869 in Smith County.
Mitchell was born on February 25, 1845 and died on September 12, 1910 in Smith
County. Dorthula is buried in Skelton Cemetery, Bluff Creek in Smith County.
On March 7, 1852 a group of Union Soldiers came to the home of James M. Skelton
and carried him away and he was never seen again. Mitchell Perry Martin is
buried in Alvis Family Cemetery, Bluff Creek in Smith County.
3. Thomas Waggoner
was born on August 16, 1834 in Smith County and died on June 10, 1876 in Smith
County. Thomas married Elizabeth Jenkins in October, 1869. Elizabeth was born
in July, 1834 and died on February 10, 1872. Thomas and Elizabeth are buried
in Waggoner Cemetery, Old County House Road in Smith County. The 1870 Smith
County Census lists Thomas’ occupation as as a teacher.
4. Ara Amanda Waggoner
was born in 1836 in Smith County. Ara married George L. Carter on January
10, 1854 in Smith County. George was born in 1829 in Virginia, his date of
death is unknown.
5. Robert A. Waggoner
was born in 1839 in Smith County and died on September 15, 1889 in Smith County.
Family legend tells that Robert was stabbed with a knife at the Rome Fair
by a Mr. Harris in a dispute as to whether he had paid for hitching his horse.
Estate records in Smith County shows he was injured on September 14, 1889.
He was treated by Drs. Crutchfield and W. T. Bains and died on September 15,
1889. Burial place is unknown. The 1850 Smith County Census shows Robert in
the home of his father, Jacob Waggoner in the South Division of the County.
6. Mary Susan Waggoner
was born on July 22, 1840 in Smith County and died after 1900 in Smith County.
Mary married John P. Carter on December 11, 1859 in Smith County. John was
born on January 30, 1828 in Virginia and died on April 21, 1904 in Smith County.
John joined Company D, 9th Tennessee Calvary on August 27, 1862 at Hartsville,
Tennessee. On July 19, 1863 during John Hunt Morgan’s raid into Ohio he was
captured at Buffington Island, Ohio. He was sent to Camp Morton Prison in
Indianapolis, Indiana on July 23, 1863. On August 17, 1863 he was forwarded
to Camp Douglas Prison in Illinois. On December 8, 1864 he swore an oath of
allegiance to the United States and was released. John had light complexion,
black hair, gray eyes and was 6 feet 2 inches tall. Mary and John are buried
in Waggoner Cemetery, Old County House Road in Smith County.
7. Betty Elizabeth
Waggoner was born on August 26, 1843 in Smith County and died on September
9, 1892 in Smith County. Betty married Brown Denney on September 18, 1864
in Smith County. Brown was born on September 19, 1839 and died on February
13, 1922 in Smith County. Betty is the great grandmother of former Vice President,
Al Gore. Betty and Brown are buried in Dowell Cemetery near New Middleton
in Smith County.
8. Celia Waggoner was
born in May, 1848 in Smith County and died after 1910 in Smith County. She
is listed as being deaf and dumb and is shown living with her sister Malvina
Ballenger in the 1900 Smith County Census.
9. Tennessee Waggoner
was born in 1849 in Smith County and died on June 23, 1914 in Smith County.
Tennessee married Richard Clay Gibbs on October 25, 1866 in Smith County.
Richard was born in 1842 in Smith County and died on March 7, 1888 in Smith
County. Richard was a Private in Company B, 7th Tennessee Infantry and was
captured at Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. He was imprisoned in Point
Lookout, Maryland. He was released on his oath of allegiance on June 27, 1865.
Tennessee and Richard are buried in Gibbs Cemetery, Horseshoe Bend in Smith
County in an unmarked location.
10. Jacob Henderson Waggoner was born May
29, 1852 in Smith County and died on December 24, 1892 in Smith County. Jacob
married Nancy Green Bradford on January 6, 1875 in Smith County. Nancy was born
on July 11, 1859 in Smith County and died on October 20, 1934 in Smith
County. Jacob and Nancy are buried in
Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage, Tennessee. Their graves were moved from the
family cemetery on the Owen farm on County House Road.
