Descendants of Carna Frances SYKES

     The following information on Carna Frances Sykes has been furnished by Peg Gaerig. Carna is her husband's great-great grandmother. Carna married William Lafayette Kinman who is believed to have been born in DeKalb County, TN. Their first son was born in Smith County, TN and soon after his birth they moved to Crittenden County, KY. William enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War and was killed during the battle at Fort Donelson, TN approximately seventy miles from where he lived when he and Carna married. His two sons were placed under guardianship in Benton, Franklin County, Illinois and received a pension from the Federal government as a result of their father’s death during the war. The documentation required by the Federal government as part of the requirements to receive this pension provided documentation that would not have been available otherwise. Peg provided the writer with a copy of the complete pension records and the list of descendants shown below. The place and date of birth of living descendants will not be shown at this time but any member of the family may obtain additional information by contacting the writer.

 

First Generation

1.  Carna Frances SYKES  was born in 1836 in Smith County, TN. She died on 21 Dec 1870 in Crittenden County, KY. She was the daughter of Joshua Sykes, Jr. and Leodicia Mangum, the widow of Elias Gwaltney.

 

     Carna married (1) William Lafayette KINMAN  on 8 Feb 1858 in Smith County, TN. William was born in 1835 in Tennessee. He died on 15 Feb 1862 from gun shot wounds received during the Civil War battle at Fort Donelson, TN.

 

     Three different dates of death were found in the pension records of William's sons. The date used was provided by the War Department. Two of his fellow soldiers filed an affidavit stating that they believe his date of death was February 16, 1862 and they stated that they saw William just before and just after he was killed at Fort Donelson, TN. William entered the service of the Union Army on September 14, 1861 at Camp Butler in Springfield, IL.

 

William and Carna had the following children:

                       3 M   ii.    William Lafayette KINMAN  was born on 1 Jun 1861 in Crittenden County, KY. He died on 7 Nov 1913.

 

Carna married (2) William H. MORRIS  on 25 Jun 1863 in Crittenden County, KY. William was born about 1835 in Crittenden County, KY.

 

They had the following children:

 

                       4 M   iii.   R. H. MORRIS  was born in 1864 in Crittenden County, KY.

 

                       5 F    iv.   S. I. MORRIS  was born in 1867 in Crittenden County, KY.

         

Additional information on Carna’s children from her second marriage is in the process of being researched but no additional information is available at this time.

 

Second Generation

2.       John Wesley KINMAN  (Carna Frances) was born on 24 May 1859 in Smith County, TN. He died on 10 Dec 1914 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He is buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

John married Leety Elizabeth MOORE  daughter of Thomas J. MOORE and Salina SWEAT on 3 Nov 1885 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. Leety was born on 11 Feb 1866 in Franklin County, IL. She died on 5 Apr 1945 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. She was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

     Leety's parents died when she was a small child and she was raised by W. A. and Sarah Godley. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Benton for more than 50 years.

 

John and Leety had the following children:

 

                       6 M   i.    Charles F. KINMAN  was born on 15 Sep 1888 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died on 19 Sep 1944 in West Frankfort, IL. He was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

Charles married (2) Mallie Lee EICKLEMAN .

 

                       7      ii.    Child KINMAN  was born on 28 Dec 1889 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. Child died on 28 Dec 1889 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. Child was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

                       8      iii.   Child KINMAN  was born on 14 Aug 1890 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. Child died on 14 Aug 1890 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. Child was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

                       9 M   iv.   Walter A. KINMAN  was born in 1892 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died on 4 Feb 1894 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

+                     10     M   v.         Harry Harvey KINMAN  was born on 16 Feb 1893. He died on 7 Jan 1937.

 

+                     11     M   vi.         Ransom Everett KINMAN  was born on 7 Mar 1896. He died on 9 Jan 1963.

 

                       12     M   vii.        John Wesley KINMAN  was born on 21 Nov 1898 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died in 1962.

 

John married Wilma UNKNOWN .

 

                       13     M   viii.       George Willard KINMAN  was born on 22 Dec 1899 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died on 19 Sep 1938 in Franklin County, IL. He was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

George married Lillian UNKNOWN .

 

                       14     F    ix.         Helen KINMAN  was born in 1902 in Benton, Franklin County, IL.

 

                       15     M   x.         William F. KINMAN  was born in 1905 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died on 5 Jul 1961 in Chicago, IL. He was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

+                     16     F    xi.         Glenna Faye KINMAN  was born on 23 Sep 1906. She died on 29 Oct 1974.

 

Third Generation

 

10.    Harry Harvey KINMAN  (John Wesley KINMAN, Carna Frances) was born on 16 Feb 1893 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died on 7 Jan 1937 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

Harry married Wilma JAMES .

 

They had the following children:

 

                       17     F    i.          Eileen KINMAN .

 

Eileen was the daughter of Wilma James from her first marriage and Harry

adopted her.

 

Eileen married Unknown JONES.

 

11.    Ransom Everett KINMAN  (John Wesley KINMAN, Carna Frances) was born on 7 Mar 1896 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. He died on 9 Jan 1963 in Mt. Vernon Tuberculosis Hospital.  The cause of death was Tuberculosis. He was buried in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery.

 

Ransom married (1) Helen JAROSKI  in 1919.

 

They had the following children:

Ransom married (2) Zelpha COOK  in 1933. Zelpha was born on 4 Feb 1905 in Benton,

16.     Glenna Faye KINMAN  (John Wesley KINMAN, Carna Frances) was born on 23 Sep 1906 in Benton, Franklin County, IL. She died on 29 Oct 1974.

 

Glenna married Samuel Ernest ALLEN .

19.     Ruth KINMAN  (Ransom Everett KINMAN, John Wesley KINMAN, Carna Frances) was born on 2 Mar 1921 in DuQuoin, IL. Ruth died on 21 May 2007.

 

Ruth married Carl Dean GAERIG. 

 

They had the following children:
